The classic Levi's Jeans 501

This time we dedicate ourselves for once not the typical classics of men's fashion as the suit or the shirt, but a more free time cult item of clothing that makes it to today, to inspire generations of its own.

For the past 140 years, there they are now already: the riveted men's pants. When Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis on May 20, 1873 received a patent for this new work pants, they would have probably have dreamed that fashion to characterize so crucial today. Were developed practical pants made of durable denim and durable copper rivets once for the hard working miners and cowboys of the West. But still shapes the mother of all jeans generations in her fashion style .

A number is a cult icon

The first blue jeans as we know them and love today were called 140 years ago waist overalls with copper rivets. It was not until 17 years later products of the brand Levi's have been assigned their own production numbers and the number 501 thus became the symbol of timeless tailoring and the personification of the respective zeitgeist.
Learned, especially in the 1950s, the 501 is a fashion comeback, because screen heroes such as Marlon Brando and James Dean established the erstwhile pants of the working class the epitome of rebellion and youthfulness. After also Marilyn Monroe wore Levi's 501 in one of her films, discovered Hollywood cult pants final for itself. The cultural impact was so great that the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC in 1964 took up a copy in its permanent collection.

Made for pioneers

Designed for the pioneers of the West, was the 501 quickly became the general favorite of the pioneers of the 20th century. In the 60s and 70s it was the garment of the peace movement in the 80s she made Steve Jobs almost become his trademark and in the 90s they made music legends such as Kurt Cobain became a symbol of the grunge movement. And even today, the jeans is an essential part of fashion.
As the new millennium suggests the Levi's 501 even the "little black dress" and the mini skirt as a "fashion item of the 20th century". And the history of Levi's 501 is far from over. On the occasion of the 140th anniversary of the famous blue jeans the 501er model is reinterpreted and first presented in a non-denim collection of so-called shrink-to-fit twill in fashionable colors. Although today no longer oscillates quite as much rebellion as a few decades ago, but the coolness factor has not lost any of the blue jeans.

Should a gentleman a 501 have in your closet?
